Hacked Flash Memory Or Faulty – Do You Know The Difference?

Posted by flashchiptutor on April 19, 2010

Is there a difference between faulty flash memory chips and hacked flash memory chips? Yes, there is.

Flash memory chips are very robust. They are manufactured to high standards. They have to be as these storage chips will hold data and will have many read, write and erase cycles. The technology is very similar to the RAM chips your computer uses for memory. There are many stories of usb flash drives accidentally washed in laundry, resisting a fire for several minutes and even surviving a day or two in a bottle of coca cola.

In the quality testing process about 33% of flash memory chips are discarded, scraped. No major brand will accept them. It is one of the reasons flash memory chips cost so much, the overhead of rigorous testing and having to discard one third of the chips produced, it is factored into the final cost. Logical and fair, who wants memory chips that will fail?

Are the discarded chips destroyed? No. Unfortunately they are not. In our recycling age, they are supposed to be destined for toys and other low grade products that do not require high reliability. There is a black market that channels a lot of these chips into usb flash drives, mp players and memory cards. Almost always into no name brands.

Low grade chips will show a lower capacity in operating systems, for example a 4GB chip will show as 3.8 GB or only 3.7 GB when formatted. Another tell tail sign is the guarantee. Items using flash memory chips should at the very least have a 5 year guarantee, just like hard disks. If the warranty is for 3 years, 2 years or only 1, then you should worry. It means the manufacturer has little confidence in the flash memory chip used. A good chip carries a limited lifetime warranty, a decent one, 10 years and a bargain one 5 years.

Flash memory chips are rarely faulty. Instead the truth is darker, often diabolical. Hacked memory.

What is hacked memory? It is when a flash memory chip is altered with special software to pretend to be larger than it really is. Do you know how many flash memory chips are made into fakes every month?
